THE TATTOO
The elephant is sacred to Buddha. Legend indicates before Mahaprajapati Gautami's incarnation as the Buddha, he developed in the womb in the form of a white elephant. The white elephant is a pristine symbol of Buddhism to this day. When associated with the Buddha, the meaning of an elephant tattoo conveys compassion, truth, peace, love and kindness. I do share some of the same beliefs as the buddhist however do not consider myself to be an avid follower of the religion.
The design is an oriental style and I found it online where people had similar elephant tattoos hover my particular tattoo was adapted to the individual tattooists style which would be the case in most as a tattooist likes to put their signature mark on the design. I had this particular image on my phone for a year and would look at it enough to make sure I still liked it. It's important to not get a tattoo on a whim because remember it will be on your body.
If you really like the design then you should have it done. It's not for anyone else to tell you that it is nice or not nice and that to determine you getting it. It's your body and you can do what you want with it just bear in mind the time frame you will have it for.

INK DAY
After paying my deposit over the phone and sending photos over email, I then turned up on the day, filled out a form to say exactly where i wanted the tattoo and gave over my ID. He asked printed off the template and then sterilised the area and put gloves on. This is all standard procedure and if you go to a reputable tattooist this should be the case for you also.
The tattoo took him roughly 20 minuets to complete and I personally didn't feel much at all. I was nervous before hand that it would hurt because of what I had heard and my advice now is to not listen to anyone else's opinion on pain. I have a very high pain threshold and have had many piercings and not felt them or not found them painful. I have been told by my piercer and tattooist that this may be due tot the fact i have very tight skin.
After he finished he put clingfilm over the tattoo and gave me advise on how to care for the tattoo and I was able to leave.
AFTER CARE
After care is something which should be taken very seriously when getting a tattoo not only for prevention of any infections, but also to keep the tattoo in a good condition and to prevent fading. I really looked into after care before getting a tattoo and I picked up some useful tips.
I kept my cling film on for 3 hours and then i took it off and washed it gently with warm water and antibacterial soap. You must make sure any water you put on it is no more than warm for the first week or so as it's essentially an open wound and it will be painful.
I washed mine twice daily this way for the first few weeks and then most applied Benpanthen Three to four times a day which is a nappy rash ointment but works brilliantly in stopping drying out which you must make sure you do in after care. I was considering salon as an alternative but found out some of the ingredients were not as good. Most places I looked at before hand suggested Benpanthen so I didn't want to risk something else.
During this phase your tattoo is healing and therefore will start to scab and itch. This is perfectly normal but you must make sure you apply the cream and not itch it. If you really need to then you should hit it or gently rub when applying the cream. Picking any scab will prevent the ink from taking to your skin as well and could ruin your tattoo.
After all the scabbing and when you tattoo is healed you can leave it but it will most likely need to be topped up sooner so I like to use a coco butter from The Body Shop to keep it from fading or looking dull. With colour tattoos you can use an oil such as BioOil to keep the colours longer.
